Summer is the time to slow down, relax and have fun, but that doesn’t mean your sales need to take a nosedive as well – with a few simple design tips you’ll be equipped with all the knowledge you need to transform your online shop from blah to whoa.
During my brief stint as a customer service manager at an online store somewhere around 2014, I’ve noticed that all things being equal, items that photographed well sold that much better. It didn’t matter how good or in demand an item was – the ones that looked awesome in photos sold faster, prompted fewer pre-buy questions and were rarely returned. This is echoed by an infographic by MDG Advertising showing that “clear, detailed images are deemed to be very important by 67 percent of consumers and carry even more weight than the product information, full description, and customer ratings.”
1. Use good profile picture
Make sure your profile picture is a unique image of high quality that not only represents your brand but is also of the same style and color scheme as the rest of your Etsy page, as well as the social media pages of your brand. Coherent style is key to making your Etsy shop look professional, reliable and trustworthy.

2. Have a unified cover photo style
Not only do individual photo covers for each ad you post need to follow a set of rules – your whole ad feed needs to be consistent, in a similar style and make sense. Photograph your products in the same style and with similar lighting. Remember to use cover photos that show exactly what is being sold (‘product-only’ photos), and at the most flattering angle – preferably full view, although there can be exceptions if a stunning partial image makes it very clear what exactly is being sold.

3. Showcase product quality
Well lit close ups that showcase quality are a must. Your customers want to see all sides of the product, all the seams, stitching, edges, and metal hardware. The more meaningful and diverse closeups, the better. Don’t use repetitive, dull or unclear closeups.

4. Provide context
Pose your product in different situations, add additional items into the photo, and make sure you display all sides of the product for your potential customers to survey. Images featuring a person provide better engagement, so, whenever possible, use a model. Context helps provide emotional connection to the item and better imagine how it will fit into your customer’s life.

5. Add graphics
What better way to make your online shop look professional than adding design graphics? Use Crello text stickers to announce a sale, signify your item is organic or add a “New” sticker. After choosing your desired format, upload your photo and adjust or edit it, then go to Texts tab to pick relevant stickers. Use a lock option to keep your stickers in place while you edit the rest of your design.

Light, clear shots of your product work best in the beginning of your product gallery, followed by closeups to demonstrate the quality and detail of your product, while in-context photos can be added at the end of your product gallery to further the emotional attachment to the item. Providing as much information about your item (size, dimensions, color, materials, possible uses, etc.) both in your descriptions and photos helps your customer decide if the item is for them and saves you the time and momentum that is inevitably wasted once a potential customer has to contact you with questions about the product before making the purchase.
